Computers take input, read it, and produce a logical output.Unlike computers, people do not always use the sole logic in their processing.The human internal processing is very complicated, influenced by many factors, many of which are not exclusively logical. Hence the infinite number of possible outputs.Despite this huge irrationality, all people are equipped with, Ellis believed that a more rational approach to ones problems may impact dysfunctional emotions and behaviors. He explained this phenomenon using the so-called ABCDE Model of Emotional Disturbance.Let us take a look at an example. A student had an exam. He had attended the lectures regularly, done all the assigned homework, participated in projects, and studied hard.However, he got a bad grade.The rational way would be to accept that maybe he did not prepare for the exam as well as he had thought or that the construction noise from outside had hindered his concentration.However, the feeling of disappointment would probably lead him to think that the professor did not like him or gave him a bad grade just because they are mean.It is clear that these thoughts are irrational and that they do not allow the student to come to terms with the failure.In the continuation, we will use this example to explain the ABCDE model.Activating Event / Adversity something happens in a person’s environment and triggers an irrational thought. The thought is created as a help to deal with the unpleasant event. In our example, that event is getting a bad grade.(Irrational) Beliefs The person holds some irrational beliefs regarding the situation in question. Their function is to help the person come to terms with what happened. They form very easily and are based on one’s emotions rather than logical reasoning. Even though they are irrational and wrong, they are a better comfort than having no idea why something happened. The beliefs from the example are that the professor does not like the student and that the professor is a mean person.(Emotional and Behavioral) Consequences The person has a reaction to the s ituation. This reaction may be an emotional one, a behavioral one, or a combination of the two. In the above example, an emotional response would be the fall of self-confidence in the student. The behavioral response would be an angry complaint to the professor. A combination of the two may be ceasing to study for the other exams as the student does not feel capable enough to be successful in his studies.Disputes (Arguments) At a certain moment, one may come to realize that the situation may not be exactly the way they see it. This realization may occur independently or with the help of a therapist, a friend, a member of the family, or even a stranger. The student may realize that it is not the end of the world to do badly in one exam. They may realize that he is not such a bad student after all. He passed other exams with flying colors. He helps his friends with the subjects they do not understand well. These are the disputes he needs to challenge the irrational beliefs he formed previously.Effect Disputing the wrong beliefs inevitably has positive effects. When the destructive thought pattern is broken, the person has new and better paths open up for them. These positive effects include holding more positive and rational beliefs. This will affect how one handles similar future situations and how they deal with the one in question. We will explain a few exercises that the readers may try on their own.1. Dysfunctional Thought RecordThis exercise is used often in REBT and in many kinds of cognitive-behavioral therapies. It targets the root of problems â€" the irrational belief.It is a thought journal where a person records their thoughts and tries to notice potentially harmful patterns (here is a useful form if you would like to try it out).There are seven columns to fill in for each irrational thought.Date and time (and/or place) â€" the date, time, and the place of the problematic situation.Description of the situation â€" a short summary of the event.Automatic thoughts that arose â€" what one instinctively thought about it (the irrational thoughts).Associated emotions what one instinctively felt.Cognitive distortions â€" why the latter two were wrong.Alternative thoughts â€" what one may have thought instead (the rational) thoughts.Outcome of the situation â€" what happened in the end.This exercise makes understanding and identifying irrational thoughts easier.While writing it, a person analyses the situation and is led to think about it more rationally.If one is persistent enough, this can prove to be a very useful practice that helps a person become independent in dealing with a negative situation in a more healthy way.2. Analysis of ConsequencesPeople are sometimes more focused on the present situation and they often neglect to take into consideration the future results a decision or a reaction may provoke.This exercise aims at comple ting one’s understanding of the problematic situation and its consequences, thus enabling proper reaction and conduct.It manages the source of the problem directly instead of dealing with the symptoms and is thus quite efficient.“By encouraging them to do clear-cut cost-benefit analyses in writing, and by their making themselves much more conscious of the harm they are wreaking, their changing becomes more likely. Of course, even when clients are fully conscious of the hazards of their dysfunction, they still may perversely resist giving it up. But awareness often increases the chances of their fighting against their resistance.”  â€" Albert EllisThis exercise is also in the form of a table to be filled. It consists of four main parts.Target This part targets the salient issue. It should be filled with a short description of the problem and the most important values and goals a person has regarding the situation.Short-term consequences This part is divided into two sub-secti ons: benefits and costs. They are filled by the short-term gains and harms of continuing the current behavior. Additionally, both sub-sections are to be evaluated numerically on the scale of 0 to 100.Long-term consequences This has the same form and function as the previous one. The difference is that long-term results are evaluated.Best long-term solution before writing anything here, the previous parts should be looked at and evaluated. One should weigh continuing the current behavior and making some changes and write the best solution for the situation in question.3. Replacing Negative with Positive ThoughtsThis is a very simple exercise. The name already suggests what is done there.A person is challenged to replace negative, irrational, destructive thoughts and beliefs with more rational and functional ones that might help in reducing stress.There are three parts of this form. The first one is a place to write a negative thought that occurred at a certain moment in relation to a certain situation.The next space is for a new, more rational thought regarding the same situation.The third place is a list with 10 spaces which are meant for evidence that challenge the old belief and support the new one.The evidence may be something that someone told, a past experience, or any other thing that supports the new belief.4. Problem FormulationThis exercise is designed for comparing the outcome of a situation which occurs after a usual response with the outcome of a situation which would occur after a more positive response.The objective is that a person learns the difference between a healthy and unhealthy response and recognize the best way to act in a similar situation.The form for this exercise has many parts divided into three main groups: the activating event, problematic response, target response.The first part has 4 sub-sections, all designed to take information about different aspects of the activating event (the A part of the ABCDE model).These 4 pieces of information are:Describe the situation.Isolate the critical factor (what it was about the event that affected you).Notice and accept bodily sensations.Invent a symbol/metaphor for the experience (one that explains how it felt).The second part of the form is aimed at analyzing the problematic response which usually occurs in reaction to a salient situation.They are the B and C parts of the ABCDE model. The three pieces of information written here are:Name the emotion.Thoughts and images (cognitive symptoms) â€" what was happening in one’s mind when the event happened.Actions and intentions (behavioral symptoms) â€" how one reacted or how they wanted to react.The last part is the healthy, more appropriate response â€" the E part of the ABCDE model. The early morning of March 24, 2006 was nothing if not the one-day that will forever be seared into my brain. Much like the ritual of an owner branding its animal, I will forever be marked with the horror of that morning. She developed the MRSA virus and peacefully died in her hospital bed after a week of complaining about feeling sick. I realized on that morning that life is the most precious and wonderful gift imaginable. Love and respect are all pieces to the puzzle of true happiness in life and unfortunately I learned that lesson too late. Though I carry all of these wonderful memories with me about my wonderful cousin Kerra, I feel an emptiness that will never be filled. Not only did I not get to say goodbye, I hurt her and those were the last words she ever heard from me. It is therefore wise to devise ways in which to manage the potential ethical pitfalls in any organization, business, and company. To start with, individuals in prominent positions in an organization should encourage ethical consciousness in a concerned and supportive manner. Secondly, a clear policy in writing should be allocated to all individuals involved; they should carefully read and sign against it to indicate that they have clearly understood the terms and conditions and that they are ready to abide by the requirements. This would play a critical role in promotion of ethical behavior. In most instances, the personal ethics of leaders either positively or negatively impact the ethical behavior of an organization. They therefore play a big role in determining the kind of ethical behavior that is portrayed in an organization. Amidst the chaos of political instability and constant warring of the Zhou era, arose many intellectual thinkers that brought such profound impact in the field of politics, religion and philosophy. Even to the day, their influence can be espied in the many matters of China. Confucianism became the paramount school of thinking and later significant philosophies such as Daoism and Legalism gained immense recognition as well. Each party had their own proposals for creating an idealistic political society where the many problems they faced in their everyday lives could be eliminated. All three approaches were very distinct but at the same time, they contained certain similarities as well. In my reasoning, I find that Confucianism and Daoism could be paralleled in many ways to find several common grounds. On the other hand, Legalism goes on to take a more unique approach which was much different from the previous two. Kongzi (Confucius, a Latinized name) was born in 551 B.C.E., to a poor family of the lower nobility. Throughout his life, he relentlessly tried to gain an office with a prominent ruler of the time who was willing to adopt his various concepts. Unfortunately, Confucius died in 479 B.C.E., before such a change ever took place. However, he succeeded in winning over a handful of devote followers who continued his legacy and Confucianism later went on to become one of the most influential thought systems of Chinese history. Of his followers, Mencius and Xunzi became the most renown. Since Confucius did not succeed in completing a manual of his views, these followers had to derive their own interpretations of the system which now formulate, the Analects. The Analects portray an idealized gentleman, and his various duties in terms of the society, family and the rituals. Confucius explains about the way (Dao) which he believed, that if the people accepted its terms and were willing to a bide, they would succeed in creating a utopian society. By the beginning of the common era, another philosophy emerges and gains wide acceptance among the commoners. Daoism, just like the predecessor and also as the name implies, puts emphasis on "the way," that a certain individual is to abide to. Even though the two systems had different concepts about the way, the common denominator of both schools ... ... Morality and benevolence were crucial factors for a successful state, according to Confucianism and Daoism. They also placed great importance for rituals and other traditions. Many practices were continued throughout generations. Legalism believed that such aspects should have no role in the government. According to them, a strong rule with a strict hand was necessary in order to keep the citizens from growing lazy and disrespecting the authority. Out of the three different thought systems, Legalism was a success in the sense that it achieved what the other two systems desperately strove for - the unification of China. "Qin conquered Yan in 226, Wei in 225, Chu in 223, Qu in 221. Now, in 221, it ruled the entire Chinese world and was ready to make that world over in the image of Qin" (Wills 41). Many of the Legalist ideas were quite thought provoking and praiseworthy; they believed in equality for all and government according to merit. However, the system gained a rotten reputation according to the ruthless rule of the First Emperor. Confucianism thus became the official Philosophy, gaining wide acceptance in China.

[pic] Rise and Fall of the Mayans The Maya people lived from 11,000 B. C. to almost 1500 A. D. At 11,000 B. C. he first hunter-gatherers settle into the Maya Highlands. According to Mayans Long Count Calendar the creation of the world takes place in 3114-3113 B. C. In the year 2000 B. C. the Olmec civilization is on the rise, the root of many traditions in the Mayan Culture. 700 B. C. Maya people form a written language of a form of hieroglyphics. The Mayan script is logosyllabic combining about 550 logograms (which represent whole words) and 150 syllabog rams (which represent syllables). There were also about 100 glyphs representing place names and the names of gods.Only about 300 of these glyphs were commonly used. In 300 B. C. the Mayans adopted the idea of a hierarchical society ruled by nobles and kings. The city of Teotihuacan is founded in 100 B. C. and becomes the center of culture, religion and trading in Mesoamerican for centuries. The Mayan people learned to farm the harsh tropical land. As populations grew, they adopted more intensive methods of cultivation including composting, terracing, and irrigation. They filled in swamps to creating fields and used silt and muck from bottomlands to fertilize enclosed gardens.Artificial ponds gave a place to hold fish, and corrals held deer and other game flushed from the forest. Their settlements grew into large city-states and with the city-states came large palaces and temples. They were very artistic; they made ceramics, murals, and sculptures. They understood the concept of zero and formed a very extensive hieroglyphic form of writing. Their year had 365 days to it and they even had made the leap year correction. They predicted solar eclipses, watched the stars, and even had their temples built so that at a certain time of year they’d face the sunrise or sunset exactly.The Mayans were led by Maya Kings, who got their power from the gods. They were both priests, interpreting religion and as leaders in times of peace and war. These kings would perform public rituals giving metaphysical meaning to the movement of the heavens, changing calendars, and even royal succession. Besides the spiritual rituals the Maya cities functioned just as a normal city would trading, fighting, making alliances, and gaining/losing land. Waka, a Maya city had become a large center of trade. Goods like jade, obsidian, and pyrite even made it to the Mayans.Waka also had a tributary to the San Pedro, it was sheltered and had room to lodge large canoes. The Mayans also invented a type of flak jacket. It was a cotton vest, stuffed with rock salt. A guy by the name of Fire is Born led an army toward Waka in means to gain reinforcements. Fire is Born was sent to conquer Tikal. With his new found reinforcements from Waka it took him a week to reach Tikal and conquer them. Fire is Born became the cities new overlord. Following Fire is Born’s take over of Tikal, Tikal itself started to expand. In the year 800 A. D.Cancun was overrun by invaders. These invaders took 31 royal hostages into the court yard, probably members of the royal family, and systematically decapitated every one of them. The king of Cancun was not spared, nor was his wife or children. The invaders took none of the riches or valuable items of the city, instead they defaced all of the monuments and toppled them face down. Almost every city was met by its end in this way or simply faded out of existence. Nobles abandoned palaces; even the homeless who had come to live in the palaces event ually abandoned them.The downfall of the Maya civilization can not be put of one simple yet terrible event. The collapse is due to many possible problems that could have damaged the empire. Resources grew scarce; kings with religious rituals lost their luster, leading instability and desperation to fuel destruction warfare. These problems may have been the cause of the fall of the Mayan civilization. Some of the religious rituals Maya Kings performed were sacrifices to this god to keep his wrath at bay. [pic] Kinich Ahau, the Mayan sun god. He brought the sun across the sky. He was an important god to the Mayans; they needed the sun to grow their crops. Sacrifices were also made to this particular god so he’d continue to bring the sun out. [pic] The Mayan god of rain and lightning, Chac, was also very important to the Maya. He brought rain to water the crops. Sacrifices were made to him to continue bringing the rain and to not use lightning against the Mayans. Chac played an important role in the Mayan religion. [pic]This is an ancient Mayan temple in Cancun. From the Mayan Classic Period, 300-900 A. D. this temple was used as a site for religious rituals. These rituals, performed by the king of the city, would have been sacrifices to the gods. Many gods were sacrificed to for the Mayans believed that the gods would be kind to them and help them if they had been sacrificed in return. [pic] This is a map of where the Maya Civilization lived. This part of the world is the southern end of Mexico and Guatemala. The sites shown on the map are locations of Mayan cities and villages. There were many of cities in Central America. [pic] This is a Mayan Ruins site. It’s the site of Tikal, a great city.Fire is Born conquered this city just a week after gaining reinforcements at Waka. This city later went on the offensive and expanded. [pic] These are the ruins of Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza was a large city of the Mayans. The temple would have been of great religious importance. Many a sacrifice would have taken place within those walls. [pic] This is a temple from Uxmal, an ancient Mayan city. This temple would have been used as a religious place used for rituals and sacrifices. Mayans sacrificed people to the gods in return for peace and aid with whatever happened to be the problem at the moment.
